Jan 8 & 9
Everest Theatre, Seymour Centre
French choreographer Leïla Ka’s star burns so bright even Beyoncé noticed, collaborating with her on her sensational Cowboy Carter tour. Ka’s first ensemble show, Maldonne, is already an international phenomenon, performed over 100 times at major festivals around the world and arriving in Australia now for the first time.
In this propulsive, visually stunning work, five incredible dancers inhabit forty dresses that each tell a different woman’s story. From wedding gowns and sequined ball dresses to everyday clothes, these garments become partners, obstacles and forms of defiance. Sourced from thrift stores, these dresses have their own names, characteristics, and histories which are brought to vivid life on stage.
Bodies spin, collide, celebrate and resist as each costume reveals another facet of womanhood – playful, powerful, vulnerable, joyful and rebellious. Dresses that shimmer, billow, trail and fly create a constantly changing stage picture as breathtaking as it is emotionally charged.
It’s much more than a fashion parade—think dance manifesto. With explosive physicality and striking theatrical imagery, Maldonne invites you to experience femininity in all its complexities. After captivating audiences across Europe, this international sensation makes its Australian debut.
Maldonne is part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef and Arpels program. Discover more here.
