Pyrmont Bridge is a historic pedestrian and cycle bridge that spans Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour, Sydney. Originally opened in 1902 and designed by engineer Percy Allan, it is one of the world’s oldest surviving electrically operated swing bridges. The central steel span pivots to allow vessels to pass, while the approach spans are made from timber — reflecting the engineering innovation of its time.
Once a key road link for vehicles, the bridge closed to traffic in 1981 and was later restored as part of the redevelopment of Darling Harbour. Today, it serves as a vital pedestrian and cycling route between the Sydney CBD and Pyrmont, offering scenic harbour views and playing a significant role in the area's identity and accessibility.
As a heritage-listed structure, Pyrmont Bridge is a landmark of Australian engineering and industrial history. Visitors can walk or ride across it, enjoy waterfront views, and connect easily to nearby attractions like the ICC Sydney, Harbourside, and Barangaroo.
