Trisha Brown

USA

A postmodern masterpiece that changes the architecture.

Description

Australian Exclusive  Trisha Brown Dance Company

Forget the theatre, forget the formula. This landmark performance piece transforms public places, in this case the iconic Art Gallery NSW, to make you rethink not just how you see dance, but how you see the world around you.

At the heart of this experience is Trisha Brown’s legendary work, Roof Piece. Originally performed in 1971 across 10 blocks of lower Manhattan, this audacious work uses distance to transcend the boundaries of a room, and the limitations of a single point of view. Dancers stand apart and all around, using the space to be in sight of each other only. No one can take in the whole: which part of the dance you take away with you will depend on where you stand.

If you think you've seen this before, you haven't. The Trisha Brown Dance Company’s recurring performances change with each installation. This living tribute to one of contemporary dance's great innovators demonstrates that great art renders its own kind of immortality.

Trisha Brown

USA

One of the most influential choreographers of her time, Trisha Brown (1936–2017) forever transformed the landscape of contemporary dance. Born and raised in Aberdeen, Washington, graduating from Mills College in Oakland, California, she studied with Anna Halprin before moving to New York City in 1961. Brown, along with like-minded artists, pushed the limits of choreography and changed modern dance forever. In 1970, Brown formed her company and explored the terrain of her adoptive SoHo.

She engaged collaborators who are themselves leaders in music, theater, and the visual arts, including visual artists Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, and Elizabeth Murray, and musicians Laurie Anderson, John Cage, and Alvin Curran, to name a few. With these partners, Brown has created an exceptionally varied body of over 100 dance works. Brown is also an accomplished visual artist; her drawings have been seen in exhibitions, galleries and museums throughout the world, she is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in NYC.
