After acclaimed seasons in Paris, Berlin and Seoul, celebrated South Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn brings her kaleidoscopic reimagining of Asian cultures to Sydney Festival. Known internationally as the enfant terrible of Seoul, Ahn draws on traditions from Okinawa, Bali and Manila, transforming them into exhilarating new dance languages that both celebrate and subvert clichéd concepts of Asian cultures.
Performed by a powerhouse ensemble of eight dancers, the production bursts with more than 90 extraordinary costumes (all designed by Ahn herself) that ignite the stage in a whirlwind of colour, humour and satire. The result is contemporary dance as cultural commentary – vivid, audacious and unafraid.
One of Asia’s most influential avant-garde artists, Ahn blends her background in Korean shamanism with training in New York modern dance to create works that challenge and expand ideas of identity and tradition. This exclusive Australian season is a rare opportunity to experience her world-renowned artistry.
THE KOREA HERALD
“Crescendo in pure form… a unique experience which I feel earned its roaring standing ovation.”
DANCE ART JOURNAL FOR DRAGONS
Educated at the school of rigor, of precise, demanding Korean discipline, Eun-Me Ahn is also a daredevill performer, ready for all kind of piracies. Some have seen her jump from the top of a crane, then attack a piano with axe and scissors, rip from herself her fairy dress made of white ties, to distribute the pieces to the audiences while performing a teddybear dance, bury herself with a clown costume under a rain of balloons, be locked behind bars in a duet with a chicken, or dressed up as a mushroom… But one would be wrong in thinking it is mere provocation. It is rather the affirmation of a curiosity and a freedom held by work and style, pushed to their most unexpected limits.
