1993 saw an incredible change in Sydney’s entertainment landscape with the launch of the inaugural Summer Mega-Festival, when three very distinct cultural events ran concurrently - Sydney Festival, Carnivale and The Biennale of Sydney. The mission was to stage a broadly based festival of popular and unique events, designed to attract people of all ages, postcodes and ethnic backgrounds. The Biennale was included to incorporate visual arts into the Festival’s program. In six weeks of non-stop activity, the festivities included theatre, music, dance, circus and much more. Carnivale included a huge, free to the public celebration of Chinese New Year.

To mark the International Year Of The World’s Indigenous People, Sydney Festival presented the Aboriginal And Islander Dance Theatre in two new programs. Carnivale Live On Tour saw some of Australia’s finest Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal musicians including Tiddas, Kev Carmody, Neil Murray, Warumpi Band, Roger Knox and Euraba Band travel around the state.
