Sydney Symphony Orchestra

The Sydney Symphony concert you know and love is back in the heart of the city. Gather under the stars to celebrate Sydney’s artistic spirit with a moving First Nations orchestral work, followed by a journey through 50 years of Festival moments displayed on the big screen at Tumbalong Park – featuring archival footage, photographs and exquisite live music from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. All conducted by Sydney Symphony stalwart Benjamin Northey.

Hear music by Australian composers including Nigel Westlake and a rising star in Naomi Dodd, while world-renowned yidaki (didgeridoo) virtuoso William Barton joins the Orchestra to perform Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s Treaty. Antonin Dvořák’s moving and powerful ‘New World’ Symphony brings the concert to a stirring close, topped off with a rousing fireworks finale.

Founded in 1932 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra has become one of the world’s finest orchestras.

Resident at the Sydney Opera House and led by Chief Conductor Simone Young, the Sydney Symphony is Australia’s flagship orchestra and performs over 180 concerts each year to more than 350,000 people. The Orchestra performs in venues throughout Sydney and regional New South Wales, and international tours have earned the Sydney Symphony Orchestra worldwide recognition.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra concerts encompass masterpieces from the classical repertoire, alongside works by some of the finest living composers and collaborations with major guest artists, connecting audiences with the profound experience of live music.

FAQs

Do I need a ticket for this event?
No. This event is free and un-ticketed; everyone is welcome to attend.

What time should I arrive?
The official program starts at 6.30pm. We recommend arriving earlier to secure a spot and get your picnic space sorted.

Is photography allowed?
Yes – we encourage you to photograph or film your visit for personal use. Feel free to share it with us using #sydneyfestival.

What happens if it rains?
The event will operate rain or shine. This is an outdoor event, so be prepared and bring warm and weatherproof clothing. For those arriving early, don’t forget hat and sunscreen. In the event of extreme weather or hazardous conditions that pose a safety risk, there may be restrictions on the program or changes to event timings. Keep up to date via our Sydney Festival social media channels.

What picnic set-up items can I bring with me?
Low chairs & picnic blankets are allowed.

What items are not allowed?
Please don't bring standard height chairs, tables, alcohol, glassware, fireworks, weapons or promotional materials, as they won't be allowed on site.

Can I bring a chair?
Yes, you can bring a low beach chair so that you do not block the views of others.

Will there be chairs for hire?
No, there will be no chairs for hire.

Can I buy food onsite?
Yes, there will be a delicious range of food options in the surrounding Darling Harbour precinct for purchase including Darling Quarter and Darling Square . You are also welcome to bring your own picnic. Please do not bring your own alcohol as this is not permitted on site. Please ensure all rubbish is disposed of in the bins located around the site.

Is there a bar on-site?
No, the site is not licensed.

Can I bring my own alcohol?
No. Tumbalong Park is an unlicensed park monitored by rangers and security personnel.

Is there free drinking water?
Yes, water bubblers are available at the event. Please look for banners highlighting locations around the site.

Are there toilets?
Yes, toilets (including accessible toilets) are located along Tumbalong Boulevard, Liverpool Street and under the Pier Street overpass (including accessible toilets). Follow the signs or see one of our helpful Sydney Festival volunteers for directions.
