Silah: For as long as you are here
(Australia)
Turning a threshold into a communal recreation retreat.
Commissioned from Western Sydney artist Wasielah Noorsjamsi, Silah (ṣila, صِلَة) creates a shared space within The Cutaway for you to gather, breathe deeply and relax. It’s a place to chill without urgency, to practice the lost art of listening closely, and to let conversation unfold at the pace of instinct.
Silah, meaning connection and the act of joining, resonates with the Arabic suhba (صُحْبَة): companionship, friendship and the act of being in another’s company. In Islamic traditions, suhba names something richer than conversation alone: a companionship grounded in presence, where listening and time spent together become forms of learning and transmission.
Activated through salons, industry roundtables and artist speed dates, the work moves between structured encounter and informal occupation. With a presence at The Cutaway, Silah offers a counter-rhythm to the momentum of the Festival: somewhere to step aside and rehearse slow attention. Drawing on the spirit of devotional listening, it treats listening not as passive reception but as an active, generous way of being with another person.
