ATOPIA
(Australia)
A doom-metal electronica opera to the underworld.
A new work premiering at Campbelltown Arts Cente, Atopia – meaning ‘without place’ – draws you into a world where contemporary performance, live music, choreography and sound art converge.
Created by artist and seven-time Australian Music Prize nominee Marcus Whale, this doom-metal electronic opera stages a danse macabre at the threshold of the underworld, blurring the boundaries between human and apparition, power and vulnerability.
A clown-like figure summons creatures from the other side, embodied by performer Eugene Choi and rapper Bayang (tha Bushranger). Growling subwoofers, howling feedback, chiming bells and disembodied voices collide with the heavy, ultra-slow riffs of Sydney avant-metal legends Bract.
Commissioned by Campbelltown Arts Centre and produced by independent arts organisation Performing Lines, Atopia invites you to experience something that can’t be captured: the immersive, whole-body sensation of intricate soundscapes and dramatic movement perfectly suited to capture the chaotic flux of the world.
