"Their drapes and folds have a voluptuous sculptural presence,
but also an undeniably glamorous bravado"
New York Times
A Schwartz Carriageworks project in association with Sydney Festival
El Anatsui is acknowledged worldwide as one of the most remarkable artists working today.
Five Decades marks the first major exhibition of Anatsui’s work in Australia and presents works from the 1970s to now, including paintings, woodcarvings and ceramics alongside his glorious hanging sculptures.
Made from recycled materials including aluminium printing plates, tin boxes and liquor bottle caps Anatsui’s works are at once vast yet intricate, majestic yet humble, solid yet malleable. Born in Ghana and based in Ghana and Nigeria, his formally complex assemblages explore the histories of colonial post-colonial Africa and issues of consumption, waste and the environment.
Please note: On Sunday 10 Jan, public access to El Anatsui: Five Decades exhibition will be closed. Carriageworks and Cornerstone Bar & Food are open to the public from 10am – 6pm, along with FBi Radio’s SMACs Festival running 12pm – 10pm at Carriageworks as part of Sydney Festival 2016.
