OKAZAKI ART THEATRE
"A formidable reputation for socially acerbic and sometimes absurdist works"
Yudai Kamisato is one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary Japanese theatre, with his quirky, unflinching and poetic portrayals of life in Japan.
The intensely personal +51 Aviación, San Borja references his grandmother’s address in Lima. Shifting between reportage and fiction, the narrative unfolds around places Kamisato has travelled, from Tokyo and Okinawa to his grandmother’s Japanese-Peruvian community, encountering Japanese immigrant communities who have built new lives in locations where Japan still exists in memory as ‘the old home’.
Kamisato freely mixes the mundane with the extraordinary in a work that is thoughtful, charming and theatrically inventive. An exploration of identity and the resilience of culture for those living in foreign lands, +51 Aviación, San Borja will resonate with anyone who’s ever felt the gravitational pull of their homeland.
Performed in Japanese with English surtitles.
