Heading out to see Edward Burtynsky's In the Wake of Progress? Before you go, here's our guide to some of the best boutique bars and eats in the area.

In celebration of the special presentation of In the Wake of Progress, Sydney Festival is partnering with local restaurants and eateries Cafe Freda's, Claire's Kitchen at le Salon, Big Poppa's, Bitter Phew, Kinselas, and Courthouse Hotel, with a range of one-off menu items and specials inspired by the work available across its three week run.


Big Poppas


Big Poppa’s is an award winning late night restaurant located on the lively, main strip of Oxford Street in Darlinghurst.

Serving up modern Italian dishes, gourmet cheeses, a huge selection of hand curated wines and non-stop hip hop music until 3am every night of the week.







Bitter Phew


A sanctuary on the bustling Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, Bitter Phew regularly features in the top 5 venues in Australia.

12 rotating taps and an over 300 strong rare and hard to find bottle list. Expect to see an eclectic and interesting mix of beers and styles. Sit by the window overlooking Oxford Street or perch yourself at the bar for a front row seat to all the action.































Cafe Freda's


Cafe Freda's is an eatery and bar located in Sydney's iconic Taylor Square.

Born from the ashes of much loved bar and music venue, Freda's which operated out of Chippendale between 2011-2020. The  food menu is based off classic European wine bars and provides both grazing and more substantial options, whilst our wine has a focus on small producers and minimal intervention varieties.






Claire's Kitchen at Le Salon


French born Marc Kuzma AKA Claire de Lune, has created a traditional French Brasserie menu with a few modern twists.

Claire has decorated the venue with fabulous imported wall papers, antiques and chic furniture. Get ready to be looked after by charming professional French waiters and waitresses.







Courthouse Hotel


A short 15-minute stroll from the Sydney CBD, The Courthouse Hotel offers up an extensive wine list, a wide range of tap beers, and authentic pub food of the highest quality.

Located amongst the buzz of Oxford St, expect a great place to stop and relax with friends for a social drink or two.






Kinselas


One of Sydney's most iconic venues, Kinselas boasts an intriguing history.

The Chapel, with its high and ornate art deco ceilings, is a striking tribute to the building's history as a funeral parlour. These days you'll find a variety of local and international beers and a heart bistro menu featuring all of your favourite Aussie classics.







Edward Burtynsky's In the Wake of Progress runs from August 25 - September 18 at Taylor Square, Oxford St. Entry is free.
