Tune into Garden Party FM

The Dollar Bin Darlings are a fabulous pair of actor/comedians who host the hilarious and shambolic live “late night talk show” Don’t Go To Bed, and also run a sideline DJing classic disco found in record shop dollar bins.

We’ve recruited The Dollar Bin Darlings to host the Festival Garden’s free outdoor entertainment from Thursdays to Saturdays, with a “pirate radio” style live show featuring disco bangers and surprise performances. Plus they’ll be on deck for free late night Friday and Saturday dancefloors after the last show in the Spiegeltent.

We asked The Dollar Bin Darlings to send us through a selection of their favourite disco classics and deeper cuts that we’ll definitely hear in the Festival Garden, and they more than delivered, with 10 tracks that span everything from Paradise Garage legend Larry Levan to Motown icons The Miracles and the queen Diana Ross.

#1 Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Inner Life

“So it turns out there was a disco cover version made for pretty much every song ever – they really just started pumping them out for a while there BUT (plot twist) some of them are really good, and this one is amazing!”

#2 Don’t Know Why I Love You – Thelma Houston

“With more feels than the Stevie Wonder original, this track has everything: heartbreak, epic disco strings and an unsolvable riddle (that sadly features in a lot of disco songs). You sound like you’re the worst…so why does she still love you?”

#3 Midnight Is The Time I Need You – Demis Roussos

“Demis Roussos! What a versatile artist: from deeply unlistenable folk stylings to this undeniable disco banger. We love him.”

#4 Haven’t You Heard – Patrice Rushen

“Patrice is the best! Super-duper talented, she wrote and produced all her own stuff, was a big-time music director, played a bunch of instruments AND is credited as the writer of the Men In Black song because Will Smith wanted to rap over one of her tracks from the 80s. There is nothing she can’t do.”

#5 I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby – Kid Creole and the Coconuts

“In 1982, four years before Oprah hit the air, Kid Creole was sharing his own brand of self-love. ‘Take a look at me / See I couldn't look no better / Girl I'm at my peak / And that's a fact, that's a fact’. If it wasn’t so catchy it might actually be a little obnoxious...”

#6 Keep The Fire Burning – Gwen McCrae

“A song about sticking it out? Never has a track NOT about a get-together or NOT about a break-up been so spicy!”

#7 Ain’t Nobody Straight In L.A. – The Miracles

“‘Ain’t nobody straight in L.A. / Freedom of expression is really the thing’. This song was ahead of its time, especially from a band who began as a clean-cut R&B vocal group.”

#8 Take That To The Bank – Shalamar

“‘Keep saving / Keep building / That interest to our love / Take that to the bank’. It would appear that in 1978 banks were seen as upstanding institutions run by morally robust individuals who could be trusted to safeguard precious property such as ‘a love you can count on, baby’. While we can attest to this track’s contemporary danceability, perhaps lyrically it only has historical relevance.”

#9 Easy Come Easy Go (Hold De Mota Down) – Odyssey

“Just listen to it. And try not to dance…if you can.”

#10 Muscles – Diana Ross

“Written and produced by Michael Jackson, this is a masterpiece. ‘I don’t care if he’s young or old, just make him beautiful… I want muscles’…Diana knows what she wants. Also, this video clip is everything.”
