Mesmerising art-pop composer Julia Holter brings her distinctive sound to Sydney, off the back of ambitious new album Aviary.
Coming from a distinctly avant-garde and academic composition background, Holter’s five previous studio albums have shifted from intimate and hermetic, to 2015’s sunny and (more) accessible critical hit Have You in My Wilderness, and 2018’s epic and expansive Aviary. Her distinct sound melds influences from classical music and baroque to post-rock, 70s pop and folk, and found sound, all held together by her electronic harpsichord and delicate vocals.
Holter’s touring band includes talented artists across drums, horns and strings, creating sprawling soundscapes centred by Holter’s singing. “There’s something rather magical,” The Guardian wrote, “about an artist who can hold a sold-out audience on the strength of her small voice…and her galloping imagination.”
