Sydney Festival Launches Soundtrack Competition

Sufjan Stevens, Reggie Watts, Beach House, The Middle East and Kaki King have all had their music featured as the Sydney Festival soundtrack.  Now the Festival is looking for someone new.

Sydney Festival is calling on composers to write a new soundtrack for the 2013 Festival.

The Festival is offering a $5000 cash prize to the writer who creates a song that best captures the essence of the Festival.

The winning composition will be used to promote Sydney Festival in videos, online and on the air and will give its creator the opportunity to be heard by hundreds of thousands of Festival attendees and fans.

The Festival has lined up a seriously impressive judging panel led by Sydney Festival Director       Lieven Bertels, with triple j's Zan Rowe, Dan Zilber from FBi Radio, Ralph van Dijk from Eardrum Australia, and Sydney Festival 2012 alumni, singer/songwriter Megan Washington.

“This will be fun,” says Lieven Bertels. “I have a great passion for discovering new music, and even better when there is an opportunity to share it with a broader audience.  I can’t wait to start listening to the entries and discovering the gems!”

The music can be any style, but the tone and feel should reflect the Festival’s motto – This Is Our City In Summer – so the hope is that the entries will be uplifting, sunny, joyous and celebratory!  Lyrics are optional, but if lyrics are used they must include ‘This is our city in summer’ and there must also be an instrumental version of the song.

The Festival is encouraging writers at all stages of their career to enter the competition.  All works submitted for judging must be new, original compositions created for the competition, and not be existing work.  The work should be recorded to the best of the artist’s ability with home-recorded tracks being accepted.

The Competition is open for entries now. Closing September 7, 2012
