Go behind-the-scenes with Force Majeure’s primal new theatre-dance workBack to
The work uses movement and acting to tell personal stories from the performers, as this new behind-the-scenes rehearsal video explains. Click play below to watch the cast in action, and to see writer and performer Heather Mitchell and dramaturg Sarah Goodes explaining some of the themes and the writing process of You Animal, You.
“The process began with smell,” Mitchell says, “and it’s now extended into all senses, in particular those very deep, primal urges [and] responses, the survival instinct that animals have and that we as humans share with animals.”
“It’s this wonderful intersection of movement and text,” Goodes adds. “[It’s] poetry, you don’t want it to literally mean one thing, you want the audience to be able to have a very strong physical understanding of what it’s reaching for, but not a literal one.
“It’s exploring those animalistic urges in us that we are a bit ashamed of… but we all have times in our lives when our bodies betray us, and that’s what makes us human.”
