Vale Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBEBack to
It is with great sadness Sydney Festival acknowledges the passing of Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE on Sunday 11 February 2018.
Sir Nicholas, applauded for his contributions to the state across media, sport and public life, was instrumental in the creation of Sydney Festival through his role as Lord Mayor of Sydney. The Festival was conceived and founded through a partnership between the City of Sydney and the State Government, with that partnership enduring to this day. Sir Nicholas remained a tireless supporter and advocate of the Festival throughout its 42 years and remained close to the organisation, particularly in his later years with his wife Professor the Honourable Dame Marie Bashir, AD, CVO former governor of New South Wales, serving as patron. The entire arts and cultural sector has enjoyed the support and advocacy Sir Nicholas and Dame Marie with our concerts, performances and exhibitions regularly graced by their good humour and enthusiasm.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with Marie, his three children and six grandchildren. Gone but not forgotten.
