Jenna Price is a Senior Lecturer in the UTS Journalism program, and a Fairfax columnist with a focus on social issues, civic responsibility and gender.
Hit play above to listen to her talk about the themes of feminism and women’s liberation in The Town Hall Affair, and their ongoing relevance in the time of Donald Trump and continuing sexual assault and harassment.
The Town Hall Affair marks the debut Sydney performance for New York’s revered theatre troupe The Wooster Group, and it brings to the stage an experimental retelling of a raucous 1971 debate on women’s liberation between leading feminists and author Norman Mailer.
“What’s relevant to today for The Town Hall Affair’s audience is that women are still struggling today,” Price says. “I hope that people who watch it realise how little has changed for women, and for men… After he’d done the town hall debate, Norman Mailer, who was the absolute archetypal chauvinist, said ‘I didn’t really understand what women’s liberation was about’, and then he did. If we can change his mind I think we can change everyone’s mind.”
