About Ruhe:
For this production, Josse De Pauw has set to work on lieder by Franz Schubert and Annelies Van Parys, textual material drawn from Armando and Hans Sleutelaar’s De SS’ers (adapted as monologues by De Pauw and Tom Jansen), and visual material by David Claerbout.
During the sixties the Dutch artists Armando and Hans Sleutelaar had a number of interviews with people who were members of the SS during WWII. These are not people who bitterly regret the choices they made, but people who are unable to rid themselves of their past.
Surrounded by 200 chairs, carefully searched by Herman Sorgeloos, male singers from the famous choir Collegium Vocale Gent and two performers take their places before the audience enter - they will come in and find their seats among them. The performance intersperses Schubert’s songs with monologues.

Josse De Pauw: “One of our reasons for doing the play, and why the book overwhelmed us as it did, is because it challenges one’s assumptions. You start reading it with the firm belief that fascism has nothing to do with you. And you don’t want to have anything to do with it. But then it soon emerges that these SS volunteers were in fact very ordinary people, who thought pretty much the same way you do.”
Tom Jansen: “It makes you wonder about how you function, about how it is possible to justify one’s decisions after the fact.”
Josse De Pauw: “After all, it isn’t necessarily what you think which defines the way you act. And that’s what Tom’s character says at one point: ‘You can, for instance, be convinced that Marx is right and yet never dream of joining the communist party.’ The moment when you join the SS can be a very irrational one. You also need to consider the fact that the outcome can influence your views later on. Victors have heroes in their ranks, but the defeated only have war criminals.”
Tom Jansen: “In fact, we’re always moving in what Kafka called the fight between the past and the future.”
Neither indignation nor the voicing of a political view is behind this production, but the gripping confusion raised by the material. Beautiful and painful. Just like Armando wrote: “Beauty is a dangerous territory”.
Biographies:
Josse De Pauw
Josse De Pauw (1952) studied at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. As an actor, he has played in many films and theatre performances. As director, his plays Weg and Larf were both international successes and he earned the Océ Podium Award in 2000. Josse De Pauw wrote several theatre texts, columns and an autobiographical book, which won several prices. From July 2000 to June 2005, Josse De Pauw was artistic director at Het Net in Bruges, and between July 2005 and June 2006, he was artistic director at the Toneelhuis (Antwerp). He is currently working as an independent director.
Annelies Van Parys
Annelies Van Parys (1975) received the Youth and Music Prize for composition and was one of six participants selected for the Tactus International Composition Seminar in which the Belgian National Orchestra rehearsed her Einklang. This work was first performed in 2005, by the Flemish Radio Orchestra. In 2005 Phrases V was selected for the ICCM’s World Music Days in Zagreb. Since then many top-class ensembles and soloists have performed her compositions. Muziektheater Transparant has commissioned Van Parys to write an opera for the 2010 programme.
Collegium Vocale Gent
Founded in 1970 on the initiative of Philippe Herreweghe, Collegium Vocal Gent was one of the first ensembles to apply the new interpretative insights of baroque music to vocal music. Musicians such as Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman and Nikolaus Harnoncourt soon took an interest in the fresh and dynamic approach of this Flemish ensemble, resulting in an intense collaboration. From the mid-1980s onwards, the ensemble received international recognition, as is clear from the list of performances on all important international stages and music festivals. Collegium Vocale Gent’s repertoire is not confined to a single, specific style period. It ranges from Renaissance polyphony to classical and romantic oratorios as well as contemporary music. Baroque music, notably the works of J.S. Bach and G.F. Händel, holds a key position in the ensemble’s concert calendar.

Going from the artistic and social topicality, production house Muziektheater Transparant enters into an intensive dialogue with artists from various disciplines and wants to create, renew and present musical-theatre in its entire diversity for a wide audience. The voice is placed firmly at the centre of the projects, and it continually blends the old and the new. Also other disciplines like visual arts, film, video, graphics are integrated in the productions. The company pays particular attention to offering contemporary musicians the chance to develop and try new work. Transparant is internationally active: touring productions are an important part of their work, and it has performed at many international festivals.
