The span of productions reveals a dedication to art form development in both professional and community arenas and a commitment to diversity and reconciliation. The company’s two artistic directors David Clarkson and Rachael Swain, have distinct artistic visions and bodies of work. Their works are presented in a range of forms, large/small scale, indoor/outdoor, street based or site specific, but are united by dynamic new approaches to dance theatre and a poetic approach to the structuring of meaning in performance.
Marrugeku is a cross cultural arm of Stalker dedicated to the critical issue of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians working together across cultural difference. Marrugeku is committed to developing new and appropriate languages of Indigenous and Intercultural dance theatre in Australia.
Stalker and Marrugeku’s works have been presented continuously at major arts and dance festivals throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
PERFORMERS
Nick Power - Director “StiltBreak”
Nick Power has been representing Australian hip hop for the past 15 years as a B*Boy and Activist. He currently works extensively throughout Australia and Internationally as a performer, choreographer, teacher and producer. Nick was a member of Gravity Warriors Crew competing and performing throughout Australia and was the dancer for Resin Dogs for many years.
Nick’s most recent credits include: director and performer of Stiltbreak by Stalker Theatre Company, performer in Survival Tactics hip hop theatre show (Sydney Opera House), Choreographer of Milpirri by Tracks Dance Company in Lajamanu Indigenous community and he is the Artistic Director of Platform 2 Hip Hop Festival at Carriageworks.
Nick has just returned from the 2008 European StiltBreak tour.
In 2004 and 2005 he worked with David Clarkson and Stalker Theatre Company to create the first phase of StiltBreak in Parramatta and Campbelltown.
Emma Leak - Performer
Graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts where she was mentored by Andrew Morrish. Emma then toured internationally for three years with performance troupe Strangefruit, produced several original works as Salon de Emma and completed five years of Feldenkrais practitioner training. In 2004, she received an Australia Council grant through the Dance Board as an emerging artist to work with Stalker and during that year travelled to Nepal with Clowns Without Borders working in refugee camps and schools, and to California and Oregon with clown Rudi Galindo.
Emma has toured with Stalker for four years as a performer in RED, 4 Riders, Fast Ground and solo in Betray at the Aerial Dance Festival in Colorado. In 2005, she worked with David Clarkson and Stalker Theatre Company on StiltBreak in Campbelltown.
In 2008 she performed StiltBreak at Hoopla Festival Darling Harbour and at Platform 1.
Rick Everett (Mr Flip) - Performer
With 14 years training in circus disciplines, this accomplished acrobat, stilt walker, contortionist, hand balancer, fire dancer, juggler and tutor has tricks up his sleeves that would easily impress those who have truly seen it all. Beginning his career at just 15 with Circus Monoxide, Circus Sonelli and training with Circus Oz, he has gone on to astound audiences across the country performing and teaching at festivals and events such as Woodford Folk Festival, Global Carnival, Stamping Ground and Moomba. In 2008 he performed StiltBreak at Hoopla Festival Darling Harbour and at Platform 1. Rick toured to Europe with StiltBreak in 2008.
Leah Tilney - Performer
Leah Tilney aka "B-Girl FliX" has been breakin for over six years now, with a previous history of over 10 years in the Gymnasium, it was only a matter of time before the founders of Channel Direct had her trained up to perform with their well-known Australian crew, Gravity Warriors.
FliX now competes and performs with her own crew Free Agentz in Brisbane, and is also a member of Trick Nasty Crew, Damage and Sweet Elite- an all star Australian b-girl crew.
FliX is quite involved in all aspects of performance including stage, television and film. Performing in some big name productions, Leah is a well sort after dancer, teacher and choreographer. Working for such companies as Industrie One, Raw Dance Company, Dancelements, Bounce, Mad Dance House, Stalker Theatre Company and Zest Factor. She has travelled extensively overseas and around Australia, both performing and teaching.
