Based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman
Directed by Rachel McDonald
Original concept by Mikhail Rudy
Actor: Sean Taylor
In September 1939, concert pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman was midway through a performance of Chopin’s Nocturne in C Sharp Minor for Warsaw Radio when the Nazis pulled the power. Six years later, after an infernal odyssey of survival during which he saved his sanity by playing silently on a tabletop every day, Szpilman returned to Warsaw Radio and completed his recital.
His memoir, The Pianist, is the story of those six years (and served as inspiration for the 2002 Academy Award® winning film of the same name).
Half a century after the memoir was written another great concert pianist, the internationally acclaimed Mikhail Rudy, read the story and dreamt up a dramatic retelling of Szpilman’s journey, which strangely echoed Rudy’s own life. Part concert, part play, The Pianist is a duet for two Szpilmans: Rudy on piano and a solo actor recounting the story.
Director Rachel McDonald brings together Mikhail Rudy and an actor as narrator for this journey through Szpilman’s extraordinary story.
Mikhail Rudy also appears in Double Dream.
