"IT IS RARE TO FIND A GIG WHERE SO MANY LEVELS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION ARE TOUCHED"
JAZZ REVIEW

One of the most innovative bands in the UK, The Cinematic Orchestra (TCO) remix live source material into a seamless fusion of electronic sampling, turntablism, live instrumental and improvised jazz.

Their spellbinding music originates from the sonic interests of J Swincoe, whose roots lie with South London indie label Ninja Tune. With bassist Phil France and a host of the UK’s top improv jazz players as collaborators, TCO mix jazz bass, raw rhythm sections, refined electronica and gorgeous vocals to create their unique sound. The sense of space and attention to detail within their music underlines the lush cinematic element from which they found their name.

In the past few years TCO have headlined festivals across Europe, toured the US in the back of a transit van and performed at the presentation of a lifetime Achievement Award for Stanley Kubrick by the Directors' Guild.

WHAT THE PRESS SAID

“…the Cinematic Orchestra’s… show was a musical event of rare beauty…more – The Independent Weekly – 20 January

"It is rare to find a gig where so many levels of artistic expression are touched, and with such intelligence." - Jazz Review

"Simply astonishing." - The Times

"Expect only to be wowed ... more" - inthemix

"Cinematic Orchestra move beyond the electro-jazz fusion of their debut to make a record more natural, more paced, and, surprisingly, better than the justly hyped Motion. J Swinscoe is more the arranger/conductor here than the producer, but of course, there's little need for samples or effects with such an accomplished band sharing the burden ... more" - Yahoo Music

"Formed in 1999, the group's sound conjures up images of serious jazz improvisers playing smoke-filled basement clubs." - The Sydney Morning Herald

The performance on Thursday 23 January was horrid - unprofessional, unmusical, boring and no member of the band has an ounce of stage presence! Go see something else.

Amber I dont know what show you saw, but unprofessional, unmusical pfft get an idea. Fare enough if you never have heard of them you may have found it a little boring as the songs are quite long and they are basically downtempo jazz. No stage presence, what drummer were you watching, or sax/clarinet player? They let their music do the talking and then energy and trip the songs became is all the presence that is needed, not some clown jumpin around.

Brett, I agree with you ... they let their music do the talking and they professionally got through the feedback glitch - fantastic performance oozing with artistic presence.

I saw the show and LOVED it. Does anyone know who the special guest male singer (from Brooklyn) was who sung 'Music Box' acoustically? It was a beautiful performance.
