Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Ray Mann Three, DJs Gian Arpino, Frenzie

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
are the unrivalled frontrunners of old-school soul and funk. Spearheads of a revivalist movement, they conjure – and embody – the vintage vinyl, analogue essence of the Stax and Motown sound of the 60s.

Last gracing the Sydney Festival stage in 2007 backing Lou Reed in the already-legendary performance of his seminal album Berlin, Sharon Jones returns front and centre stage, bringing her own classic soul and retro funk stylings to the Bar with 9-piece musical masters the Dap-Kings.

Since their formation, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have toured their signature brand of groove relentlessly across the globe, released three critically acclaimed albums and been sort-after collaborators – Jones working with the likes of Rufus Wainwright and They Might Be Giants, and the Dap-Kings with Kanye West, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse.

With the Dap-Kings’ thumping rhythms and ultra-tight musicianship and the raw soul power of Jones’ soaring vocals at the Bar for one night only, this is one not to miss.

Local lads The Ray Mann Three deliver a collective musical style that is boldly minimal yet surprisingly full and startlingly dynamic yet warmly intimate. Bringing you their soul groove jam honed in front of audiences in the secret night spots and lounge bars of Sydney's inner city, the Menn add ‘urban, neo-soul, a dash of funk, lots of spunk with a truly fresh spirit’ to the evening’s mix.

Local ‘Groove Therapists’ DJs Gian Arpino and Frenzie join the soul revival.

By arrangement with Niche Productions.

WHAT THE PRESS SAID

"Her voice sounds forged in the fire; although you can hear in it traces of soul and blues and gospel singers of the past, it has a smoldering energy all her own...more" - The Guardian

"Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings are the unrivalled frontrunners of old-school soul and funk music...more" - AXN National

"For years, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have been experts at recreating the sound and feel of vintage soul and funk...more" - World’s Fair News

"She is Sharon Jones, and she carries herself with a classical elegance, time has not wearied her, as they say. The burden is always on her, to keep things interesting and new." - Music Feeds

"Sharon jones projects her gritty, credible, emotion-laden, stylistically undistinguished voice over some of the finest horn charts ever created for soul music -- funky, jazzy, subtly voiced things that compare to Pee Wee Ellis' trickiest writing for James Brown." - Rolling Stone

"The woman embodies the culture and sound of early soul better than just about anyone else: all the old tropes are there (Naturally’s “My Man Is a Mean Man” and “The Dap Dip” from Dap-Dippin’ With…), her soul/funk compatriots the Dap Kings are exceedingly proficient, and her voice is a force not to be reckoned with." - Stylus Magazine

"After years of working in the music business, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are a critic’s darling, and are now on the cusp of larger commercial success as well." - The Edge Boston

"Not even Lou Reed could deny Sharon Jones" - Metro, SMH

They rocked it on Syd Festival First Night. The Dap Kings brought the funky soulful sounds and Sharon Jones was playful, strong, engaging throughout.

Once again the Divine Miss Jones & the awesome Dap Kings blew the crowd away at the Becks bar. Have seen them every time since their 1st visit & without a doubt they consistantly deliver & get better each time, this band is pure class, do not miss them & Thank You Sydney Festival can we have them again next year.

For my money, the tightest, genuinely funkiest, most authentic soul music revue playing on the planet in the 21st Century. See this band before the cheap imitations take over...
