THE BAYS (UK) | RUN LOLA RUN

UK band The Bays make exhilarating live electronic music. Their seamless segues from hip hop and drum ‘n’ bass to ambient grooves and dubby basslines challenge every old-school notion of a live band. A band with no recordings, no rehearsals and no set-list, The Bays live in the moment, giving an unrepeatable, completely improvised performance every single time.

Here, the band takes Tom Twyker’s iconic 1998 film Run Lola Run as inspiration. A punchy play on fate and choices with a three-way plot that careens through cartoon sequences, bank heists and the urban jungle, it is the perfect fit for The Bays’ fast, loud, dazzling music.

The words 'hip hop' and drum 'n' bass are music to my ears! This style of music combined with what I'm told is a brilliant film should make for a fun night under the stars.......

If you are using a non-IE browser, the side bar drops down under the comments. Poor testing Sydney Festival!! As for the event, should be a good mix of sound and sight.

Saw this Wednesday night. Always was a great movie and the Bays made it more so. A great marriage of music to the action - gets the blood pumping! Go see it tonight.

Wednesday night - It wasn't just the film. It was the whole experience. The evening was perfect with Darling Harbour, full of families and friends having fun. Finding somewhere to sit (or stand). Watching the short films with the growing crowd applauding after every one. Then watching Lola run and run, and scream, to the great sound of The Bays. Having the city and its neons on all sides seemed just right.

David

I'd like to know if there are any restrictions on alcohol =S No glass/no alcohol is usually for big events, but for a picnic-under-the-stars movie, alcohol should be ok... right? Jazz in the domain, etc. allows alcohol

Do we bring chairs or are there seats? can you bring alcohol or are there options to buy food/Bev on site?

TheTrish
15/01/09
No option to buy food or drink other than regular darling harbour fair. Recommend cask wine with plastic cups or tinnies as I saw some Glass confiscated. Bring pillows or soft ground sheet as you are on concrete and it is very crowded. get there an 2 hours before to get the wood pylon front seats. fantastic night, great music and it is in German but with subtitles so you can hear the music. awesome night.

yesterday I heard how one security-guy said, that alcohol is not permitted. It's an alcohol-free area. There are no seats, bring a blanket or camping chairs. And be there at 7am at the lastest to get a good spot. You can buy food at Subways for example. enjoy it! You'll love it!

Darling Harbour is an alcohol free site and so no alcohol (in glass or plastic is allowed) - sorry! There are some benches around, but bring a blanket to be more comfortable :) (tip is - be there early for a seat on the steps in front of the screen (around 7pm it starts to fill up!)

I'm planning on going tonight but the weather looks a bit scary outside - what happens in the event of a thunderstorm? Will it be cancelled?

Mark Taylor

Do we need chairs? If it is raining is the event still on?

Sydney Festival
15/01/09
Hi j and Caity, The screening might be delayed if there is heavy storm, wind or rain but at this stage the event will proceed as planned as the storm looks like it will pass. Thanks.

I think it's right near loads of bars & restaurants so I don't imagine getting drinks will be too tricky - well I hope not! Not sure about the eats or the sitting arrangments - I might take a rug!

Intriguing German film offering three versions of the same tale - Lola's 20 minute flight to deliver 1M Marks to save her criminally inept boyfriend. The Bays techno beat sat well with Lola on the run. But, was the whole greater than the parts? No, as much as The Bays were hypnotically engaging they took the easy route of laying their frantic beat over Lola's run and falling silent during the film's more subtle drama. (2.5/5)

Raining and windy on the North Shore, in a quandry. Any news- delayed or proceeding?

Bob

Can the organisers explain why the screening of Run Lola Run was delayed for an hour until 9:30pm yesterday, when the only storm had passed before 6pm? Until, that is, another downpour just as the opening credits rolled. Very poor (pour?) effort.

absolutely brilliant - the music and atmosphere was perfect for the film! Am going back tonight to check out 'Enter the Dragon' :) Thanks Sydney Festival!

Did this event happen last night? I had planned on heading there with a few friends but when I got to Darling Harbour at 7pm, the weather was awful - windy, overcast etc so we all piked. Did it go ahead?

KR
16/01/09
Brilliant! The music really heightened the experience of the film - The Bays were fab (as always!) Bob, there was an announcement that they were having technical difficulties which were the cause of the delay, and not anything to do with the weather as I understood it. It was just a bummer it started pissing down when it finally started - but all the unprepared people left (it was forecast to rain!) and gave many of us a better spot : )
