An epic, rapid-fire celebration of Gypsy life and song combining the power of the brass section of the legendary Fanfare Ciocãrlia with the Gitano guitars of Kaloome and the soul of the great voices of the Roma community.
These legends of Gypsy music come together in The Domain for a magical night under the stars, with 20 musicians and dancers from all over Europe taking you on a journey through some of the most pulsating, moving and beautiful music you are ever likely to hear.
As well as the pumping beats of the brass section, the concert features guest vocalists - heroes in their home countries- including Macedonia’s ‘Queen of the Gypsy Singers’ Esma Redzepova, Bulgarian star Jony Iliev, the electrifying vocals of Mitsou from Hungary and Romanian Florentina Sandu.
Following the recent success of our Domain music tributes to New Orleans’ jazz, Brazilian bossa nova and Puerto Rican salsa, this promises to be one the most popular events of the 2009 Sydney Festival.
This is music made for a summer’s night.
Fanfare Ciocãrlia and Special Guests also appear at the State Theatre.
Iag Bari - Brass on Fire screens as part of Festival Flicks.
The Gypsy Queens & Kings is playing as part of the Festival at the Domain series. For more events at this precinct, click here.
Doch - 5:15pm
Warm up your dance moves early at the Domain with a special appearance of the Brisbane 7-piece band Doch. They will have you laughing, dancing, shouting and celebrating; a perfect way to start this high energy night. With repertoire ranging from cacophony big band wedding music to dance tunes with the oddest time signatures, cabaret-style French chanson to Russian tavern songs. Doch’s shows are pulsing with a relentless energy and a boundless sense of humour.

The Macedonian Gypsy Queen is a real Queen for me - adopting and educating over 40 children (as she couldn't have one of her own) it is a generosity hard to find today. I love her voice, make you hair goes up... |

If the romanian band reads this online comment, we really enjoyed your show at the opening night last week but could you also sing some more songs as well? Not just play instrumental music. Like Mori shej, Mar dyandya, Ay Romale, Nane Tsokhe etc etc. we LOVE these songs. |

Main performance group at 8pm. See note above about warm-up group ( 5:15pm). Suggest if near Woolloomoolloo ,try Harry's Cafe de Wheeels (pie/peas/mash/gravy). Then can walk up via footbridge near art gallery(has lift at one end). |

The show was great. The performances were invigorating. The only problem was there was nowhere specific to dance. We tried to dance up front but the security guards kept telling us to go back to our seats. Poor organisation for this one!! |

I really enjoyed the first night that the band played on the opening night of the Sydney Festival, I felt, however, that last night lacked the moment and enthusiasm until the last 45min. Very disappointed also that there was a break for half an hour with no one playing to get the vibe going. Oh well there is always next year! |

This was gypsy music, NOT jazz. But then again, neither is cat empire, which is white-psuedo-rap-occasional-freeformsolo. So I'm a purist. I also protest to people marking out 10 square meters to 'reserve' space for 'friends' and then find out only 5 people show. So they then proceed to sit 2 feet apart from each other and spread blankets far and wide. There was enough space for 20 people. Just inconsiderate and selfish. I don't care if they get there at 11 AM. I think ALL spaces should be taken by 5 PM or be relinquished. |
